The Rappan Cup and Bayern Munich.
At the end of the 1962-1963 season, FC Rouen took part in the Rappan Cup, the forerunner of the Intertoto Cup, a competition for teams that had not qualified for the Champions Cup or the Coupe des Villes de Foires. The FCR became the first French club to take part in this competition.
The Rouennais achieved a feat in the previous round, eliminating Bayern Munich. After winning 3-2 in Germany, they repeated the feat at Diochon with a 4-2 victory, qualifying for the quarter-finals!
In the quarter-finals, FC Rouen faced Standard Liege. The Diables Rouges won the first leg 3-0, and although they drew the second leg, they qualified for the semi-finals.
Unfortunately, in the semi-finals, FCR were eliminated by holders Slovan Bratislava after a heavy 5-0 defeat in Slovakia. Despite this, the Rouennais team’s progress remains remarkable, thanks in particular to their exploit against Bayern Munich, and they can leave this competition with their heads held high.
